What is it?
Pinterest is a place where you can share collections of ideas and things that you find useful or even just enjoyable. The word is a combination of “pin” and “interest” which is pretty much self-explanatory; it is essentially a virtual bulletin board where you can put pictures, videos, craft ideas, recipes, etc. you find while surfing the Web. Church Juice recently posted a two-part series; Pinterest for Churches (Part 1: The Basics) is a great explanation for anyone interested in learning more about what exactly Pinterest is and how to use the popular social media site.
The site doesn’t have specific pages for businesses like Facebook do, but businesses and organizations aren’t discouraged from signing up. The interesting part about this is that the site isn’t intended to be used so much for self-promotion as it is for promoting the work and ideas of others. This is quite a different approach to media marketing for many businesses, but the trend seems to be catching on quickly.
Can churches use it?
We think so! A few churches have already hopped on the Pinterest bandwagon. Using Pinterest and other social media sites to share your church’s culture and beliefs (via video sermons, inspirational quotes, scripture verses, etc.) can increase attendance to worship services and other events. Increased attendance and participation typically leads to an increase in donations so the church can continue to grow and expand its ministry. Church Marketing Sucks teamed up with Mars Hill Church to discuss their own experience with the site. You can read the full article here; the interview offers some great insight and advice. Church Juice’s Pinterest for Churches (Part 2: Strategy) also lists some notable ideas on how you can make the site work for your church.
We have been busy pinning, too! You can check out our boards here.
